For some reason they think independence = freedom. Personally I think independence = loneliness!

It depends on what you mean exactly. For example do you mean they can't go out with their friends anymore?
If so then its not a question of giving up independence but giving over their lives. Why should a man or a women give up everything for the other? One person cannot fulfil everything a person needs (and i don't mean sex here). If this was the case then you could follow it through that they don't need family either.
Apologies if i'm off the mark. But if i'm not i think that the healthiest relationships are those that also have strong bonds external to the immediate relationship - this doesn't mean he doesn't love you!

I believe they have a fear that some how they will lose out in some way. Its a selfish way of thinking for these men. Truly, one could never really give up their independence. If you are a whole person, meaning no extra baggage or emotional issues. Then giving up "independence" would not matter.

Why should we? Just because you are in a relationship doesnt mean you shouldn't be independent. If you both gave up your independence and then you were separated for a long period of time then you wouldn't know what to do.

Because most men have found a way to adapt to women ignoring them....blowing them off and giving them trouble.
So they found a nice way to live and be happy. Who wants to give that up for a mouth that won't stop flapping and giving them nothing but aggrivation and trouble?

I think the question is more why do women think all because a person is in a relationship they have to? You can have both.
