This is an election year for all House members, 1/3 of the Senate, many governors, many state senates and houses No one (even President Bush) is goofy enough to reinstate the draft because it means losing this November's election and the one due in Nov., 2008. After that date the would be draftees, and their supporters. will take to the streets. I don't see the draft being reinstated ever unless an honest attack on this country happens. By honest, I mean not contrived like all of our wars to date except for the Revolutionary - and I'm not too sure about that one.

There would have to be one hell of a crisis to bring back the draft and we are no where near that point.

Besides if there was a real problems there are far more true Americans in this country (they are called Republicans) that would likely volunteer to serve. Just like the flood of new recruits we got after 9/11.

Far, far before we got anywhere near a draft coming back, we would just take off the gloves. No one has ever seen what we could really do, if we needed to. I have complete faith in our military might which right now is harnessed back to about only 20% of their full capability. Take that harness off, and step back.

The only time it has even been discussed in congress was during the 2004 election campaign. Democrats introduced a draft bill and buried it in committee so they could claim it existed. Republicans forced a vote, and most of the Democrats that sponsored the bill voted against it along with all of the Republicans.

Given the number of draft bills that have been introduced since Bush took office I fear its only a matter time before the next big covert terror operation blamed on Iran occurs to get a draft passed.

highly doubtful. People use this as a scare tactic. While the military struggles to meet its recruiting goals - there are other ways ways to entice recruitment without going to a draft.

Considering that the military still has a vision of downsizing and individual augmentation is in full effect - I don't see it happening.
