I am purchasing a house in California that my family(Wife , Son-16) and I will be living in it for all of the summer and for a few weeks in the winter. Does anybody know what you have to do to get a California Drivers License for all three members of my family? Do you know if we would have to retake the drivers test or could we just fill out a form and get the licenses?? I am also planning on buying a car in California and getting a California tag and was wondering what you need to do to get a California tag if possible, versus tagging the car in my home state. Thank you!

Since it appears that your intent is not to become a CA resident, you do not need a CA license. Your home state licenses will be sufficient.

You can tag your car in either CA or your home state. In most cases it's probably worth tagging it in your home state if you will be driving it back and forth to CA. CA tax and smog inspection rules are pretty onerous and you'll be better off in most other states if vehicle will be used in both states. Compare the costs and administrative hassles (annual inspections, personal property taxes, etc.) and go with whatever is best for you.

To get drivers licenses in California, you must bring your birth certificates (not a photocopy), and for the wife, the marriage certificate to document the name change. It will be $26 per person. You will have to take the written test, but the drive test can be waived, as long as you have an out of state drivers license (expired is ok). Your son's process will be a little more complicated, because he is a minor. Here is a link to investigate that:

You will not be able to have two different licenses, however. As stated above, it is illegal.

For buying/registering a car in California, there are many factors. Here is a link for that:

This link is for buying a vehicle in California and registering it there. For bringing in a vehicle from out of state try this link:

Good luck....

It is against the law to have drivers licences from more than one state. There is quite a penalty for commercial licences.I kept my NY license while in CA with the military. Some states do have reciprocity as far as the tests go. You can easily get a car tag by showing your local address.

If you have a license from another state, you only have to take the written test, not the road test. My understanding is that it is against the law to have licenses from multiple states.
