Torrent and Equinox get Suburban gas numbers. And Phantom, Hyundai's have grown in popularity and made astounding advancements in their reliability and quality. The Tucson would not be a bad pick at all, but there are other options available to suit your specific needs.

If you're looking for just a commuter SUV, the new re-designed Rav4 is beautiful and a gas miser (compared to other SUV's). The Ford Escape Hybrid gets economy car mileage but has a bad rollover rating. The Honda Element definitely gets the nod in the versatility category and the FJ Cruiser/ Nissan Xterra is your choice if you're looking into off-roading.

I dont have one, but you would pay just over $17,000 for a GL Automatic in Chicago (including the $1,000 rebate).

Also, consider the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe for about $18,000 (including 3,000 rebate). You get a 6 cylinder (instead of the 4 cylinder with the Tuscon), without giving up too much gas mileage (about 2-3 mpg less). Plus, it is a lot bigger. They have the huge rebate on the 2006 Santa fe because it is being redesigned for 2007. If money is no object, check out the 2007 Santa Fe, which just hit the showrooms last week.

Out of the 4 you listed, I would choose the Tuscon. I recently was looking for similar vehicles, and chose the Honda Element. A lot of people think they are ugly, but it is the most versatile vehicle I have ever seen.
I almost bought the Sante Fe, though.

You wont be able to get the Compass for under sticker for awhile and the Pontiac and Chevy are overpriced in my opinion.

Good luck with your decison.

never buy a hyundai for over 8 grand...def. check out the torrent and equinox...they just got a 5 star crash test rating by the government...so they're very safe. they're also good on gas and fast.
