Rat terriers are wire-hair dogs, Jack Russells are silky hair. Rats are a bit smaller than Jack Russells. Temperament is different, and so is the reason they were bred. Rat terriers go after rodents, so be prepared for a lot of digging. Jack Russells were for speed, and hunting, so if you have a cat be prepared for your Jack Russell to chase it.... etc... etc....

as of April 1 2003 there are no jack Russel's the name was changed to parson Russell's go to the AKC web sight and you can find the breed standard for both of these dogs

Rat terriers are a little bigger than a chihuahua. Jacks(parsons) are the size of a regular terrier.
