Hold it next to your ear and thunk it on the other side with your finger. The sound should be a crisp almost ringing sound. If it's dull, the watermelon is either not ripe or has "hollow heart". This is not an old wives' tale; I grow them in my garden and that's how I can tell they are ready to pick.

You could use my method, but it would be pointless.
Put it on top of the fridge. When it explodes it was ripe a few days before.

Don't thump it... that is an old wives tale. I usually shake, then smell them. I usually pick good ones.
