Hold it next to your ear and thunk it on the other side with your finger. The sound should be a crisp almost ringing sound. If it's dull, the watermelon is either not ripe or has "hollow heart". This is not an old wives' tale; I grow them in my garden and that's how I can tell they are ready to pick.

This might sound crazy, but Im a little country, and us country folks now about stuff like that! LOL But seriously, thump on it a couple of times and if it sounds hollow, then it's perfect.

You could use my method, but it would be pointless.

Put it on top of the fridge. When it explodes it was ripe a few days before.

Don't thump it... that is an old wives tale. I usually shake, then smell them. I usually pick good ones.
