I am absolutely amazed at these morons who have answered this question.
For weeks now I have posted this answer dozens of times!
I've posted the source (Fair Credit Reporting Act) many times.
And you guys STILL want to show your ignorance and give bad answers? Oh well.....just proves you can't believe most of the answers here. Word of warning, unless they give you a source for their answer don't believe it.
Negative items on your credit reports only stays on for 7 years, beginning from the date of the delinquency. After that, it must be removed.
Many times, collection agents will "re-age" the listing by changing the date to show the charge off day, or even the day the received the file for collection. This is illegal, and you can sue them in small claims court for $1000 very easily.
They get away with it because most people don't know the law. Evidenced by the terrible answers you just received.

Seven years from the date of last activity the credit reporting agencies are required by law to remove the item. It will show the date of last activity on your credit report. But if you acknowledge your debt or make any attempt to pay it the seven years starts over.

The collection agency can sell the debt to someone else, and it can stay on your credit report for years. Unless you pay it, I would get your credit report.
Get TransUnion, Experian, and Equalfax, and see how there reporting it.
