i had my taxes amended in May and am expecting a pretty big return. amended returns are suppose to take 8-12 weeks, and it's going on week 11. how would i find out where my return is, it seems kinda difficult to just "call up the IRS" but it's getting frustrating

It is the IRS's "where's my refund" page. You can enter your social security number, filing status (single, etc), and the expected amount of your refund (to the penny), and it will give you the status.

We were in the same situation, ours was amended as well, we didn't hear from them, so we called the IRS and come to find out, they were sitting in a pile of papers, where they shouldn't have been. They were supposed to send them electronically, today.

that's probably your only route, you might try going on-line to the IRS and see it there's anything there about checking on the status of returns
