begotten means born.
Jesus was born to the virgin Mary who was made pregnant by God.

Also God created Christ in the beginning.
One more - God can do anything God wants

Take your 10 year old.

Take a lump of clay.

Describe the characteristics of the lump of clay to your 10 year old.

Split the lump of clay into 2 parts.

Now you have 2 identical lumps of clay, both with identical characteristics.

Now consider God the Father doing exactly the same thing to himself.

That's how Jesus was eternally begotten of the Father.

True God from True God.

Begotten, not made.

One in being with the Father.

Jesus and his Father consist of the very same, eternal, godly "stuff" (whatever that "stuff" really is).

Go any further and you're confronted with a mystery of faith, which our finite human brains cannot comprehend.

That's where faith has to take over.

God doesn't beget, that's for the animal kingdom to do. Jesus and God aren't one. There is a verse in the Bible called the Comma Johanneum that says that Jesus and the Father are one, but this was inserted into the text of the Bible in the sixteenth century, when the King James Version was first published. It's false, there is no trinity and it ain't holy.

Beget: To father; sire.
To cause to exist or occur; produce: example: Violence begets more violence.

this is Webster's dictionary definition. i have always thought it was pretty accurate. to explain it to the young person you might help him see your family tree and say "grampa begot father, (caused to exist) father begot you...." then explain that God caused Jesus to exist even though they are one in spirit they are separate since Jesus came here to live a human life so He could know how hard it is for us and take that knowledge to God and ask Him to forgive us for being such dorks. (and being human is being a dork!) also in Genesis there is Jesus' family history starting from way back to show who his human family is, and to show that through the generations we are all related to each other through human existence.

it is good that your child is inquisitive, keep finding ways to answer his/her questions. a useful tool i used with my kids were bible stories coloring books, children's bible and a teen study bible, all of which break the complications of the bible down more simply.

blessings,

What you do is you read your child the bible. God told us the Jesus was His only Begotten Son. He was chosen to take our sins and die for us. He was resurrected, and made it possible for all of us to return to our Heavenly Father.
