I love my Grandpa to death (he is 90) and he is a good loving man, but my mother and I always have to correct him about using the “N” word when referring to black people and he as names for every other race on the earth. I have dated a black lady and a Mexican lady myself and I just can’t understand how an intelligent person can be prejudice. Any thoughts anyone?

He comes from another time and place. He is your elder and grandfather. It is not your place to correct him. Respect him. Accept him for who and what he is and just love him. But dont let negativity affect you.

I had the same problem with my grandfather, he refused to be happy for me when I told him I was getting married becuase it was an interracial marriage. I think it was unbelievable that he said or thought that, however that is how they were raised, it wasnt prejudice it was life. That dosnt make it right but you know what they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. And I would have to say that prejudice is a combination of ignorance, stupidity, and fear.

It's more ignorance. I know plenty of people who are well educated yet the only contact they may have with blacks are thru a TV set.

Thomas Jefferson was a vewry intelligent man yet he had slaves. It was the ignorance of the times. These white dudes did not know better. After all, if you are all for freedom, how do you explain having slaves?

He is neither just raised in a time where the dominace of ignorance was the correct way of living and today that ignorance still stand but its just plain stupid. Its also hate in those who will not believe or accept another race based on skin color. I have dated asian, white and latino outside of my race. Only blame him when its him who totally denies to accept other races but blame his upbringing.

As stupid as this sounds now...when he was raised...they really thought the different races were different species of humans. Seriously.

And at one point, the "N" word was more acceptable than *****.

When my mother was young...dating someone who was Italian, or Jewish or Hungarian was a horrible idea...(she was German)...from her parents' view. They'd have never even considered someone black or Indian or Asian as POSSIBLE!

All you can do is correct them...forewarn any dates..and try to keep them out of public as much as possible.
