The DC Metro system is handicap friendly! Even the buses have special access. My recommendation is the Hyatt in Arlington, VA. The hotel is right above the Rossyln metro (blue line.) It is not as expensive as staying downtown.

When people go to DC they generally do not stay in downtown DC. The hotel prices are high and its much better to stay in the suburbs near a METRO/subway station and take the train into town. There is a train stop right on the Mall in front of all of the Smithsonian museums.

Use a web site like Expedia.com or Travelocity.com and look for hotels in your price range that are near a metro station. The Smithsonian station is on the Orange and Blue Line. SO look for that.

Here's the map of the Metro web site.

The area where the Smithsonian Museums are in isn't a hotel area. It's mostly federal buildings. When you are searching for DC hotels, look for those in the Capital Hill area to be the closest to the Smithsonian museums. And Capital Hill hotels are not usually too "reasonable", but if you do some searching you might find something in your price range.

There's a Holiday Inn near L'Enfant Plaza that seems to be pretty popular.

And I read online somewhere this week that the Omni Shoreham was running a special - $99/night. Pretty cheap for a Georgetown area hotel. Not near the Smithsonians, I know, but a great hotel.

there are quite a few but I cannot remember the names. Try google.com, or yahoo search. I stayed at L'Enfant, it was nice, and very close to the Smithsonian, it was in walking distance.
