Hit Cntrl, Alt, and Delete all at once. Task Manager will pop up. Hit Processes to find which programs are hitting your memory. 100,000 K or so is alot, usually big software like a game. Small background programs are usually less than 10,000 K, and are more akin to stuff like media players.
You can also go to the Performance tab to see what percentage of your CPU's power is being utilized.

in windows its quit easy. just hold the famous Alt+Ctrl+Del and u'll get windows task manager. There go to the Processes tab and there u'll see all the processes that are running in ur computer. and you are given the CPU usage and memory usage of each tasks.
but if the process or the program is visible in applications tab, and you see 'Not Responding' in front of that, that surely is the program troubing you. Just click End Task.
by clicking on the sorting tabs below you can sort the processes to see which's using the most of the resources. memmory or CPU. if it uses more than 80% CPU or about 50,000KB of RAM, its a lot of trouble.
if u wanna end any disturbing application, this way's the best
