It is unusual but it happens. I had a cat that was very loving and sweet until he saw any dog. He would have a Dr. Jekyll/Mr Hyde transformation and would pick up fights with dogs much bigger than him, and guess who was the loser... Once a neighbor complained that Confucio (my cat) had hurt his Labrador. He only scratched his nose. Everytime that dog saw my cat he would scramble for safety. Confucio died of old age.

Some cats are not afraid of dogs. I had a big white cat that attacked dogs to protect us as little kids. I guess it happens . . .

Some cats have Napoleon Syndrome and only take on more than they can chew. I've known some cats that have all of the neighborhood dogs watching their backs when they walk down the street. It's hilarious, but please be very watchful of your cat, because all it would take is one good bite from the big dog to kill your cat, and that would be very sad.

It doesn't happen often, but there are cats who will tell dogs what's what in no uncertain terms! There was this one half-Siamese tom I met while visiting his owner- and we had a puppy with us who was entirely too rambunctious. The cat got fed up and thwapped her jaw- you could hear it in fact. And the puppy ran yelping to the opposite corner of the yard. She behaved herself after that.

I used to have a cat named Bojangles who used to "Hang Ten" in the neighbor's German Shepherd at least once a week. (Quite funny watching Frauline running down the road with Bojangles attached to her back). Your cat is telling the dog to stay away and to watch out.

That is so cool when they arch their back and walk sideways. My cat does the same even to rotties. He don't care.
