I'm much older than 12, but here's some ideas.
1. Volunteer - either spontaneously - play with other kids, even "non-cool" ones, or for an organization (golf course, church, food pantry, tennis club, whatever).
2. Be a friendly person. A lot of people wonder why they struggle to make friends and they're the most abrasive people around.
3. Go to places where people of your age hang around.
a. Church
b. Skate parks
c. Soccer parks
d. Swimming places
4. Volunteer - I know I mentioned this before, but you can surely make great friends with people you've worked alongside, especially in volunteer work.
5. Get out of the house.

Go to places that you are interested in, or if you like any special activities, like photography, biking, whatever-go where those people are. You will have a shared interest and will meet new people. Same with the library, parks, wherever. Check your local chamber of commerce for groups available in the area-are there any museums or amusement parks or anything....depends what you like. If you have a particular interest, say, for example, in medicine, volunteer at a hospital or nursing home-you will build a network and your resume' at the same time!

Well, you'll be going to school- there are tons of people your age there...take up a sport, attend a book club, sign up for a hiking group, look into college extension courses like art or martial arts...

I guess essentially, figure out what stuff you're into, find a group that's already doing that, and join. You'll end up talking to people about stuff you have in common, and then you'll become friends.

Try volunteer work. That is a great way to meet lots of nice people.

Join an organization that has members nationwide.

Go for a stroll, and say Hello to neighbors out mowing their lawns, walking their dogs, etc.

Check out Meetup at http://www.meetup.com.

Myspace is a fabulous source for friends, networking and dating-really! I was surprised at how many good people partake in it. Is great for keeping in touch and finding old friends and classmates too!! And be friendly-talk to strangers, you have nothing to lose. Good luck!!
