Better be aware of the fact that some widows NEVER let their husband go when he dies.
That being said, encourage her gently that it is time to move on.
Tell her you love her now, that you are alive, and so is SHE, and that her ex would most likely approve of HER being happy with YOU now.

Help her learn how to live and love again.
Spend time with her if possible doing some fun things together and with her kids if she has any. Go to Church, see movies (funny ones) and Picnics.
When your relationship builds begin to talk to her about her deceased husband and what he would have wanted for her.
A good scenario to use is this: What if you had died and left your husband alone. What would you want him to do? Grieve, Remarry, live alone ????
Make her wheels turn. Also find out how many times she goes to the Cemetery and what days. Then find something new for the two of you to share on those days. Bowling, Golf, Picnics, Movies, Volunteer work......etc. Be patient and caring. Let her know that she is still alive with a surprise Kiss and and big Hug and cuddle up with her on a sandy beach to talk.
She needs to let go and you need to help her, if you really care about her you can help her through this.
Been there and done that 1987.

I'll let you know when it happens. But I doubt I'll ever fall in love with a widow!

Run for the hills. I married a man who lost his wife and I will never be loved by him as much as he loved his first wife. You feel like you are second-best, never to be first where you should be!

First of all, don't try to take her husband's place. Also, don't try to diminish her memories of her husband. Take it slow and convince her that you are as worthy of her love as her husband was. Try to make her see that life is for the living and she needs to move on.

Tell her... Losing a husband and wife are hard. Maybe if you told her you love her it might open her mind up a little more.

comfort her and tell her that her hubby will always be in her heart and wherever she goes. i think it would be better if u start out as friends first and then as a couple. just listen 2 her and hold her hand. be very nice and gentle with her.

Tell her you love her, and somewhere along the way remind her that she still has a life to be lived.
