There is no political interest in defending Israel, there is only a religious interest crusaded by evangelists who have strongly inflitrated the government.
And no, Israel is not a demcoracy. It is a theocratic state. Its highest courts are Rabbinical courts, just like Mullahs in Iran. Israel citizenship is based on religion! The Bill of Rights clearly states Congress shall make no effort to recognize religion, and yet here US is defending a country that is anti-thesis to this amendment.
And why should you be afraid of N.Korea attacking? Is it just because Bush and Rumsfeld keeps you afraid? NK has no record of attacking or threatening US. Nor does Iran or Syria.

Well lets see, Israel is one of the only truly democratic forces in the region. It is a stabilizing force in a sea of Islamic extremists. If they fall, then the other moderate Arabic countries will be next on the list (for an example, see the terrorist attacks that occured in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt).
North Korea have done nothing but rattle sabers at us, and throw the equivalent of tantrums. The Islamic Extremist threat is as real as 9/11.

I would ask why we would not support a democracy with a open market economy and a stable government. It is in our interest to support any such government any where.
The question of its boarders and its right to defend itself are complex but we should never abandon a country and culture that we have so much in common with just for the sake of appeasing word opinion or a temporary peace.
Don't forget they are fighting entities that have more in common with Al Quada then any other groubs in the world. It is in our interest to see such groubs deafeted and show that there violent means and message only result in hate and suffering.

to david g. your wrong israel is not the only democracy and not the only ally in the missle east...turkey is a democracy and a ally ...saudi arabia tho not democratic is a ally..LEBANON is a democracy....
now to your question...no theres no strategic interest... wellllll.... maybe a little we need some one to give us a hand in that part of the world. but the most reason we support them is because morals the US is a very christian nation and we felt bad in ww2 when the jews where killed so when they gained nationhood we where their biggest supporter. back to america being christian... see christianity had its roots from judiasim and so we would perfer a jewish nation controlling christian holy places than a muslim nation. and that goes back to the crusades.

I think you're asking the wrong question. What is the ethical value of Israel? Think that in one country the three major world religions were actually happy. Islam,Judaism, and Christianity all existed peacefully. (Interesting fact- Israel was created in 1949.)
