It can both and can be neither.
Some wars were started over women as in the case of theTrojan War
Wars can sometimes start for the stupidest reasons.

I've always thought it was people that were the cause of War & Greed. It's in our nature to compete, battle, and want what's best for us. It's the way any animal works. Religion however is often and has often been the excuse for these things.

there have been a lot of wars in the name of religion there is nothing Holy about war that i can see but the real battle has already been one and that's the one between Satan and Christ but i don't see Greed there accept people using religion as a way to line there pockets but that is the individual and not the Church's.

Greed is more a motivator for war, but religion is often used as the reason (a veil).

It is the cause of many wars. I think we came up with the greed all on our own.

Neither one according to Jesus himself, for wars are fought for various reasons.
He said that there would always be wars and rumors of wars, so greed or religion is not the cause of war in
EVERY
case.

Religion or faith?
Sure, religions have done bad things and the name of religion has caused wars. That does not mean that the faith behind those religions cause wars!

Religion is the cloak that is worn by many in an attempt to divert our attention from the greed.

I don't believe that it's religion itself. We are all human beings, and animals too. Animals protect their territory by going to 'war' with other species that threaten that territory.
Human beings have the ability to rationalize our activities. So, instead of 'needing more resources to keep our species alive' (usually someone else's resources), we say that it is because 'they don't treat their people well.' Religion is just another reason people use to justify their actions, not the cause.
It is usually "us versus them," and the religious and cultural differences help one side to vilify the the other. The other side usually becomes 'unrighteous,' but they themselves are 'righteous.' It really doesn't matter which side you are on.
