A cult differs greatly from the foundational teachings of a major religion. It contradicts or revises what has been taught, traditionally, throughout history.
A sect is a group that breaks off of a major group only to change a particular practice. For example, re. baptism, should a person be baptized by sprinkling, in a large body of water, as a baby or an adult?
In Buddhism, should Buddha be worshipped or should one just follow his moral teachings?
In Islam, does the leader of Islam have to be from Muhammed's family or can he be appointed?
No major religion, no matter how popular, has survived if it didn't have a common scripture which everybody followed. This is why the religions of Rome, Greece, and Egypt died out.
Most of your thoughts could be transposed. Both cults and "real religions" maintain that they have a direct pipeline to god.
Investigate and study. Keep an open mind. If you settle with anything, I hope it has to do with a kind heart and doing no harm to others.

Amen and Halleleuja. to no longer p.c.. any particular faith, yet evaluate Mormonism, which believes that Jesus married English females after he died on the circulate, and thats why the English have continually been so superior. Then He visited usa and taught the locals to construct pyramids. tens of millions of people have faith this. Absurd? they do no longer think of so. It merely seems to be the numbers that make the version, no longer the middle ideals.
