Or is it more the technique of application that gives hair its body?

*Please do not answer this if you have no idea what a hair relaxer is or if you have no understanding of how they work.

I have had different relaxers in my hair since age 10 (I barely know what my natural texture is anymore if I don't look at pre-age 10 photos!), but the way I style it is probably what's weighing my hair down and keeping the bounce away.... Thanks ladies for the honest and helpful answers!

I don't have very thick hair, and my "new growth" curl pattern is more on the "wavy" side than actually curly. Could this be an issue?

Relaxers are permanent straighteners, and I would recommend affirm but for the body and bounce its all in the way you style your hair once the relaxer is rinsed out. You want to try a great setting lotion, if you wrap and sit under a dryer it always leaves the hair silkier than just blowdrying and your style last longer.

For the sleekest texture with more body, bounce and shine, go with a relaxer that has lye in it. I recommend Mizani or Affirm. You'll probably have to go to a professional for those brands (call the salons and ask if they use them), but you can buy other brands of lye relaxers from the beauty supply store. I have a cousin who has been using a Mizani lye relaxer for three years; her hair is mid-back length, and beautiful. It's also very wash & wear - she doesn't even have to flat iron it after washing it, as soon as it dries, it's straight and ready to wear.

Lye relaxers work better than "no-lye" relaxers, because "no lye" relaxers coat the shaft of hair with a calcium substance that doesn't rinse away completely, while lye relaxers rinse clean. There is nothing wrong with lye, "no lye" relaxers are meant to be gentler on the scalp, but you lose a lot of the benefits.

Relaxers relaxes the curls so you need to add a setting lotion for more bounce or body or add a shampoo and conditoner that adds bounce or body. Or add curls with the use of a setting lotion.

My beautician uses Motions on my hair and has a lot of volume(bounce) after a perm(relaxer).

A dermatologist once told me that Affirm relaxer was the best one in terms of less hair damage.
