I'm not sure who's butt you pulled that statistic from, but you are way off the mark.
In who's opinion were some of these individuals Innocent or non-violent? Were you there?
The taser has prevented 30% fewer shootings since its inception.
If someone is high on PCP or some other wonder drug these morons use, they have a choice to be taken down by a 40 cal. or a taser, which do you think they would prefer?
There is a chance they could die from a taser since their heart is ready to explode anyway. They will certainly die from a 40 cal.
If you care to argue this point, I suggest you volunteer to experience both methods and you be the judge, or corpse, I don't think you would be missed by anyone.
Now that's sad.

Actually you need not be violent to have the taser used on you. Many department use it in lieu of having to get physical if you are not cooperative. Perfectly legal. They figure it is better to use the taser than get in to a physical altercation. Less injuries for the officers and the suspect. Would you rather go back to bone crushing batons? Taser is generally safer and better for all. You quickly recover as opposed to shattered bones with batons.

I don't really care. Here's why.
I'm not out on the streets at night. I don't hang out with Jerry Springer "white trash" sort of people. When trouble occurs with people I steer clear of them. I'm not out seeking the thrill and seeing "what's up".
The innocent people who are getting tazed aren't sitting home in their living rooms watching American Idol or conversing over dinner. They're out where the action is. So what. You do that and sometimes you get in the way even if you are innocent. That's the price you pay to play.

What we need is to take a few of these thugs (the tazer happy police) to court; sue them for damages, prosecute them and get them behind bars. Excessive force is never acceptable, Police who use it are violent criminals who deserve prosecution not respect.

police do not determine innocence or guilt, that is for the courts to decide. non-violent is a very loose term... what you consider non violent and what a police officer has to consider as non violent could be very different things.

FIRST, your data is way off. It's .05%. That's right. less than one percent are tazed, and are found not guilty of the crime they were initially being arrested for, BUT at the time of arrest, they were combative, so it was appropriate then.
I'm guessinig you got stung or someone close to you got stung, hurts, don't it??
Even if it were 25% (in your drems) that still wouldn't convince me enough to have the use of them stopped.

I've never been tased, and I'm guessing if I were to be, that I'd have to be doing something that I shouldn't
