if you believed in Jesus or Mohammad but not the bible or the Koran, you're whacked. b/c what they both preached came from the bible and koran.

It only make sense when believing is based on definite knowledge.
The life of Mohammad was well documented, you can find plentiful of them written and published by Muslims and Christians authors whereas that of Christ hardly anything is known about his personal life.

As for the Quran ,it was completed during Mohammad time and has remained so for 1400 years. The original is still available for inspection.
The early Christian, however, lived without the Bible for many many years before having the first official version.

Any sensible person ,putting faith aside and using a scientific methodology, can easily see how the two Books came into being, how credible they are in term of authenticity, quality of sentence etc,etc .You will find that the Quran will excel in all areas and criteria.

Yet most people are not willing to chuck out what they believe from childhood.

Your question is not clear. I believe that Jesus did exist so I guess I believe in him. He was interested in helping people understand other people and to get along with them. I also believe some of the things mentioned in the Bible but not all of them. The Bible contains a lot of history and a lot of opinion.

I also believe that Mohammad existed and that he tried to tell people how to get along with each other.

At the times of Jesus and Mohammad there was a lot of strife and they both tried to teach people what they needed to know and to do in order to minimize hatred and unjust actions.

Sometimes people just won't do what is right unless they have something to fear and therefore the religious aspects were emphasized.

For example, Mohammad told people to pray five times daily but he also told them to clean themselves before praying. Maybe the end result was to keep themselves clean to prevent disease.

Believing in Christ and the Bible makes more sense that believing in anyone or anything else, including not believing at all.
