There's no such thing as universal signs. Probably, if you have to ask, it is. Any relationship in which someone is being manipulated through fear and/or insult is abusive.

Just remember that everybody has abusive moments. (This part doesn't apply to physical abuse.) If there is a patterned behavior of emotional abuse, then the relationship is abusive. If somebody blows up once or twice in a month, then there's an anger problem, but it can be dealt with.

There is NEVER an excuse for physical abuse.

The first thing one notices about someone who has been physically abused is that they tend to duck when someone near them moves quickly. They never feel safe, always looking around the room, not knowing when the next hit will fall. Wearing long sleeves and sunglasses to cover the bruises...Always defending the abuser.

Emotionally abused folks tend to have low self esteem and feel worthless. Often attempting suicide. Problem is, some people behave this way when they haven't been abused too.

A sadness that never ends. Slumped shoulders and lowered head. Lack of respect in front of others. Change in personality when the abuser is present. Accident proneness. Unexplained anger. The appearance of dishonesty, or covering up.
