Are you asking because you want to try it? If so, You must really be in allot of pain. I know I was when I did it at 15 (24 yrs ago). I would not advise it because years later the marks are very embarrassing. I think it has something to do with being so numb that pain is the only thing left to feel and to make you feel alive. I hate when people give me useless advice that if I could follow I would not have been miserable in the first place. I could tell you to try to express your pain through art or writing or something, and once in a blue moon there is a decent counselor that might help, but plenty of people will tell you that. I will say that you might think about where the pain is coming from, is someone abusing you? If so do you really deserve to abuse yourself on top of it? Probably not, and do you want to give them the satisfaction? I don't know who you have if your life, if anyone, but no one is ever gonna care about you like you can care about yourself. Don't hurt yourself, you may be all you've got. You are alive, you exist. Is there anything that would make you feel it, like a roller coaster ride or something?

I agree with Lisa - it is a coping mechanism. Endorphins are
released that provide a "quick fix" they let off feelings of being
in control and it feels good "at the time" but it's dangerous! I,
too was a cutter, & the cutting did make me feel good, but in the
end I saw that this was a cycle - if you are in that much pain why
not go into counseling? You can end up with a nasty infection &
you don't want that. Self Injury is done on all parts of the body,
but mostly on the parts that others do not see. Why? because of
the fact the person is ashamed someone will find out.
I stopped, but I surely do not recommend it as a cure all!

I think it is a way of expression. It is a (yes bad and self destructive way) but an outlet. People all around the world do it. Some hurt others and some hurt themselves. I don't support it, but as a self destructive bipolar teenage girl i have to say its hard. Its not accepted by either the person or the spectators but it happens and it helps. It is a small fix to what leads to be a big problem. I have tried to stop SOOOOOO many times and it takes time, lots of time.

self mutilation is normally a symptom of a deeper problem and if you have a problem with this you need to seek help. You need to talk about it.

If you put cutting yourself under self mutilation I do it all the time. Nobody will listen when I try to talk to them so my outlet is cutting. I enjoy it really.

it is a coping mechanism for lots of people with borderline personality disorder. it is not stupid or anything like that. it like a person with a fever sweating. it can be helped with therapy and people who are none judgmental and caring. its not an over night fix. been there and done that. if you have never been there then don't answer the question.

I think it works, as a short time solution. But I also think it causes more problems and eventually gets worse than the original problem.
