Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

Good luck!

There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

There is no missing dollar. This is just a good example of how easy it is to make accounting mistakes. You could just as easy say "they paid a total of 27, plus they each have a dollar, plus the bell hop has 2 dollars, which totals 32; where did the extra two dollars come from.

The correct accounting is that there are $25 in the hotel register, $2 with the bellhop, and $3 with the friends. Or, they paid $30, got five bucks change and tipped the bellboy $2.

The clerk has the extra dollar. If you subtract the $3 from the $27 paid by the friends that leaves $24. We know that the clerk has $25. There is the dollar diffence.

They actually paid 28 dollars for the night. Which is roughly 9.33 cents each. Since they paid 28 for the night add the 2 dollars that the bellhop stole and you get 30!

Originally, they paid $30, and each received back $1, so they now have only paid $27. Of this $27, $25 went to the manager for the room and $2 went to the bellboy. Ta dah!

clerk at the end has $25 only. now if we say that in the begining itself each friend pays $9 then the total money clerk had is $27. but he had at the end only $25.so $2 out of $27 went to bellhop.thus their is no question of dispute.

No, your assume to characteristic the bell hop's $2 to the $25 paid to the hotel. Then the $3 given to the three friends, for this reason entire $30. as a result the three friends have been suckered returned for paying $9 each and each because of the fact the bellhop took $2 out their refund. so surely, the three chum have been meant to pay $8.33 each and each.

lets do this in terms of numbers
10x3=30
30-5=25
5-2=3
25+3=28 There is your missing dollar
They actually paid 28 for the room not 27
The Bell hop takes the two, they each get a dollar back, paying 9 dollars a piece, but 28 dollars in all....
They actually paid 9.333 a piece
