Go to yahoo maps and type in the location and they have a interactive map section that you can search for all nearby hotels, restaurants etc. let me get the link.. please hold =)
http://local.yahoo.com/?csz=New+York%2C+NY
you'll see it says favorites etc. but this link:
http://local.yahoo.com/NY/New+York/Food+Dining/Restaurants/index.html;_ylt=Agi6xZPV61ubFbVIZUcCcyWGNcIF;_ylu=X3oDMTBtbDFsOGZsBF9zAzk2NjEzNzg5BHNlYwNici10b3A-
will give you the specific different kinds of restaurants to choose from - then it locates them on the map, and you can go to the star on map and it will give you address, phone, etc.
I always use this before traveling so you know what is around, good luck!

There are a bunch on Seventh just south of the Garden that are burger pub type places -- Mustang Sally's etc. There is a Irish Place on Eighth and 34th that I can't remember the name of that was a little more upscale that is good. Then there is Keen's Chophouse on 36th between 6th and 5th, that is an expensive place with great huge steaks where you can also eat in the bar for smaller portions for a cheaper price than in the dining room.

Madison Square Garden is in the 10018 zip code area
Use that zip code and search the web. The following web site will help.

The site lets you choose among the cuisines, lets you see a menu, and provides you a photo tour to give you an idea if you would like the place.

Great question. There used to be many good restaurants around 33rd and 7th. With the demise of the NYC garment district, I can't name a one within four blocks of MSG.

Why sweat it? A subway ride or a five buck taxi ride will deliver you to some of the best restaurants on earth.

Daisy May's BBQ USA is awesome. It's on 11th Avenue.

There are also great Korean restaurants on 32nd and 33rd street. Great Korean BBQ et al.

EatSleepGo has a great map that plots all the recently reviewed restaurants. http://www.eatsleepgo.com/NYC-Manhattan.html
