Do you call it "soda" or "pop"?

I have found out by experience that people in different parts of the United States call what they drink soda, pop, cola, soda pop, coke (any), and just cold drink. Why some will call a drink coke even if they are talking about root beer is beyond me. And usually, in some parts of the South; people will say just cold drink in reference to any kind of cola. I hope this helps.

I'm originally from Massachusetts and I call it soda. I'm now living in South Carolina and most of the people I've met call it a drink. I'm not much for conforming, so I still call it soda and have actually gotten the guys I work with calling it soda.

I live in California--we call it soda.

Incidentally, I did a whole research paper on what people call "soda pop" around the country. It is amazing to see what others call it. My favorite is in the South--You ask for a coke--they say what kind? Coke is the generic term--then you tell them Pepsi, Sprite etc. Pretty interesting.

Southern is DEFINITELY not pop. I normally just call it whatever the drink is, like I'll say I want a Coke, or a Dr Pepper, or Root Beer or whatever. But if I call it by a generic name I say soda. I HATE it when people call it pop. It's just one of my pet peeves for some reason (I'm from the South).
