Only you can determine what you need or not on your pc; but don't get rid of essential services or the system will crash. As someone mentioned, a good place to start is with Process Explorer and its sister programme (both free) Autoruns which shows you everything that starts when Windows boots. Get them here

A good all-round tool is Whats Running (free)

How would a program know what is needed and what not? You're the one putting the crap into the computer. If such program did exist it would probably stop things you wouldn't want it to stop. So best thing is to go to MSCONFIG and do it yourself.

No, but I recommend you go to start->run->msconfig->click the button under general for selective startup (not the tab) and tehn click the startup tab. Click disable all and restart your computer. It should run faster.

Free programs no person should be without:

AVG anti-virus (the best anti-virus out) - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-free
Spybot Search and Destroy (gets rid of all spyware) - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Ccleaner (cleans old files and corrects registry problems) - http://www.ccleaner.com/download/
Lavasoft Ad-aware (gets rid of nasty adware) - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
