I have a 13-week old Italian greyhound. She's unbelievably hyper. (Italian greyhounds are usually calm and timid--yes, she's a pure bred IG.) Looking for non-drug options.

Those who say that IGs are naturally hyper have no idea what they're talking about. BTW, I have another IG...been 3 years now.

I would suggest taking at least one hour at least of exercise each day. The exercise will calm your pup down greatly. Another way of calming an overactive animal down is lavendar oil. Lavendar oil can be bought at your local health food store, and it is completely harmless and natural. By putting a few drops on a cloth and rubbing it into your dogs coat the lavendar will relax the animal and you. I use it when I have to give a speech, because it is a natural relaxant. I hope this helps.

Some dogs have more energy than others. My IG has medium level energy but my friend's IG is one of the most hyper that I have ever seen and she is nearly 4. Your dog needs lots of exercise. Try taking her to a dog park. I had to take my other dog to the park for 2-3 hours when she was a puppy. As she got older she calmed down some.

Then give her Chamomile tea, to help her relax and calm down.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for her. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed such as an IG. . Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before she needs to relax. It will keep her happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as needed.

If your grocer doesn't carry chamomile, you can use 'Sleepy-time Tea' as it is the same, but with added herbs. Plain chamomile tastes better to a dog.

After she has had her tea is a very good time to work on her training lessons, as she will be calm enough to focus on the lessons.

She is very young, and in my experience almost all puppies are really hyper, even the seemingly mellower breeds. I have a puppy too, a cocker (granted, a more hyper breed). We exercise at least an hour a night, whether it's a long walk to get ice cream (for me), a trip to the dog park for running, or hiking in the woods. This helps immensely!!! Plus it's healthy for me to get the extra exercise, so everyone wins! I know it sounds so simple, but it's amazing the huge difference this makes.

Are you kidding??? Who ever told you they are calm? I have friends with IGs and they are VERY busy dogs.

She is a BABY! Sighthound babies are notoriously wild and naughty. She may calm down some as she gets older, but they are generally a very 'perky' breed.

Take her for walks, play some games. You are right, she doesn't need drugs, being hyper is just IG nature. Learn to love her enthusiasm.

well, first, she's a puppy...so you've got to expect some normal puppy behavior, regardless of the breed. Another thing is that even though IG's are small, they still need lots of excercise. Try increasing the amount of time you are spending excercising her (this doesn't include playing in the back yard...she needs long walks or time to run with other dogs)
