I was listening to the BBC News report on NPR the other night and they said that the general population of Iran is getting mad at the government for "throwing away" money by giving it to Hezbollah, when there are so many problems at home in Iran that it could be used to address. So I guess that even the Iranian people believe it.

I'd say, that by asking this question you have told the rest of the world two things.
1: You are fairly young.
2: You are a little scared of what the future may hold for the world.
Let me put your mind at rest that this world has been mighty close many times to what everyone thought might be "The start of the end"
Back in the 60s it was the Cuban crisis. We all thought there would be a World War 3, but there wasn't.
At one time we all thought Libya had THE bomb - and it was aimed straight at us - but it wasn't.
During the 1940s some maniac in Germany thought he would take over the whole world - he didn't.
Then there were the "Weapon's of Mass Destruction" (that weren't) in Iraq.
Or how about 2,000 years ago? They thought the Roman's would conquer the whole world. Mind you, they have won the World Cup! (soccer, in case you're American)
Things don't look good now - but hey, we've all been there before.
