Working in a child inpatient center, I would definitely say that certain kids need to be institutionalized. In most children with oppositional behaviors, it is evident when their medications have been tampered with because there is a obvious change in their behavior.
While a large portion of the unwanted behaviors can be attributed to environmental settings, family dynamic, poor limit setting, etc., the purpose is not to change those settings so they are more suitable for the child. The purpose is to empower the child with safe coping skills that they can use when they return to the settings which may ultimately be the root of their behavioral dysfunction.

If my daughter ever gets to that point I will need to look very hard at myself to see what I am doing wrong. I do not believe for a minute that all these kids are just born to mess up. The problem is so many of us are so out of touch with ourselves we can't see it when we hurt someone else, especially our children who we too often take for granted. So many parents blame their kids, but kids are kids and it's our job as parents to teach them how to live in this world and treat them with dignity and respect. I am older now but I was locked up for running away as a kid. I ran away from a mother who was...whatever, but those places did not help me one bit. Maybe they help some better these days I don't know, but the parents need help too. It makes me sick when I hear parents take no responsibility for their kids problems.

Actually, medication would be my first road to travel down. Rehab being the last...but hey, you do what you need to do. There really isn't any shame in needing so special attention that you need to be hospitalized over it. Besides, if it is THAT bad a doctor is talking hospitalization, then maybe it is the best place for the child to be at the moment.

Have you ever watched dr. phil? taking them to councilers? have you ever wondered why some kids are controllable and some are not? it not bi polar or ADHD (the majority of kids are misdiagnosed). it parenting syles go to www.drphil.com
Dr phil calls those kids the squeeky wheel cuz they're the ones making the noise so ppl asume that they're the "problem child" and dump at centres or put them on drugs but its really a FAMILY problem.

I would try to find the best treatment possible if my attempts at parenting failed. Medication will be a last resort, though.

well, i think i would tell the kids myself that if they don't calm down that they won't get to see there parents anymore. naturally, they'll say "fine!" but they won't mean it. and if their behavior is still uncontrollable then i would have no other choice.
