Honestly, the amount/quality of education you get in public schools is pretty shoddy, but I'd still take them over home school. The only things that I think you really need from elementary/secondary schools in the U.S. is a basic grasp of the English language, some math skills, maybe some home ec and health but that's probably about it. All of the history, foreign language, and other classes are taught at a level that makes them virtually useless in life and you'll make up for it once/if you go to college. If you aren't going to college, then I don't think "who won the battle of bull run?" will come up in your burger flipping career.
What DOES make a big difference is the social skills you acquire in public schools. Those are indispensable. You may learn more in a home school (if your parents are geniuses or something), but it won't make up for what you'll lack in social skills.
The only home-school people I've met who were well adjusted were those who went to a lot of summer camps / were involved in some sort of organization like boy scouts or girl scouts. Even in doing that though, you miss experiencing the (although sometimes limited) diversity that public schools can offer.

Public schools give you more opportunities and a taste of the real world. Homeschooling can be very constructive but doesn't feed the competitiveness or social skills that young people need to get ahead. It can be very limiting. We often learn a lot from the people around us in an educational environment. Creativity needs options in order to grow. There is much to be said for public schools (conventional educational systems). They also have shortcomings, but there are more positive than negative. It is important to find a conventional school that has peers that you can relate to and feeds your need to mentally and socially grow. We also do learn from negative things...about what we like and do not like. It can also make us stronger as adults.

Even though the public school system is pretty screwed up I would still have to say public (private would be better). I believe it is vital for a child's development to interact with other children from both social and economic backgrounds and also learn to solve problems that arise in the real world. I know many home schooled kids and they all have problems to some degree interacting with others. Plus I really don't find them that much smarter.

Public school for my kids! I think that everyone should be required to attend a public (or state approved private school) after grade 7. If a person is going to grow up to be a productive citizen they need to learn how to socialize with people of all backgrounds and ideas. From my experience it seems that many (not all) parents who home school kids have 'control' issues. ~ just my opinion based on personal experience.

Public school and I'll make this short.
*able to socialize more
*make more friends
*able to have girlfriends which would be harder to do if you were home schooled
*you have to deal with time management
*people don't recognize home school education as well as public school education
*you have more choices of what classes to take in public school
*you're forced to put up with the loud mouths and the popular people which can make you stronger emotionally because you'll know how to take it
*people judge you by what you wear and what you like like which is another downside
On the other hand, I hate school (what it teaches us, etc.), so ThePeskyWabbit is right in part. Check out my question, "Why are schools in general so stupid?"
I'd still choose public school though.

public school, definitely. the contacts that i've had with homeschoolers weren't too great...many of them are sheltered and idealistic because they haven't spent as much time around other people and places as public schoolers have. besides, my parents are pretty strict and if i were homeschooled, i'd probably spend 10+ hours learning instead of the usual 6! lol =)
