Study study study start studying now!!! Learning to fly the plane will take around 40 to 60 hours but you will be up flying solo in around 15 to 20 hours the mechanics of flying the plane wont give you too much trouble but where I see a lot of my students get held up is on the knowledge portion of the flight training.
Check out these free websites and start studying!!!

Here is a list of the text that I recommend to all of my students
The FAR\AIM
The Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual (The big tan book)
The ASA Private Pilot Oral Exam Guide
The Airplane Flying Handbook (FAA-H-8083-3)
Get a sectional chart of the area that you will be flying in and begin familiarizing yourself with the area.
You can purchase all of these online via www.sportys.com or you can have sportys mail you a catalog
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has several free training aids available online you can look them up at www.aopa.org
If you send me your e-mail address I will send you all of the training documents that I have on my computer please specify if you have dial up or broadband as some of the files are a little large.

I am an FAA Certified Private Pilot Ground Instructor and I can tell you that in the US the average cost is about $6000 for a private license or a better start-up option is a "Sport Pilot" license for half that amount. To get your license over the summer is a challenge but it can be done. A pilot license is a minimum of 40 hours flight training (average is 55) but a sport pilot license is half that amount. If your serious about getting the license, you need to plan to fly several times each week. You will also need to get aeronautical knowledge ground school training for either certificate. You will take both a written and flight examination when you have demonstrated competency for both written and flight exams.
When I got my private I flew every day, soloed in one week and had my license in 2 months. The average person flying 2 times a week will get it in 6 months. Fly every day and you can do it on your vacation. Good luck.

When I got mine, it cost $2000. That was 1977 when a C150 was $25/hr. My friend got his 10 years ago for $8000.
It depends what planes rent for in your area, and how good you are.
In Canada the requirement is (IIRC) 45 hours of which 20 had to be dual. Last time I looked, a Cessna 152 or equivalent was around $100/hr. and probably $170 with instructor (dual).
So, the minimum in Canada is 25x100 + 20x170 = $5900. The numbers may vary depending on the location, price of gas and instructor. You probably have to pay $200 or more for ground school and books. You can't flight test until the instructor thinks you'r ready, so it may take extra hours.
Not sure what the rule is in USA. In Canada, you must fly every 5 years or redo a test. The limiting factor I found was the rules of the flight school. Nobody wanted to rent you a plane unless they knew your ability (1 hour of dual checkride first) and sometimes their insurance required that checkride if you hadn't flown in the last month! So, if you skipped a month you have to cough up $170 or more up front.
Rules may vary in the USA.
Still, it's fun. For cheaper alternatives, there's the sport pilot license...

short and sweet...cost......you can find aircraft for less, but on average you could plan on rental @ about $100 hr. Flight instructor 20-30 hr.
head set $3-700.books, e6b(slide rule type of flight computer)plotter,
flight bag etc. $1-500. Medical exam $75-125 Written exam $75
Practical (flight)test $200+- Nation Wide it is taking Private pilots around 70 hrs to complete training.
As far as how long. as others have posted it depends on how often you fly and how YOU learn. You have some "book learning" to do as well. Weather will be a factor, many lessons were canceled due to wx when I was training.
As the TV ad might say:
Private Pilot training....$10,000...
first time flying the plane solo....PRICELESS!
Good luck!

if you can find a good flight school and flight instructor that won't gouge you, you should be able to do it for about 4-$6,000. A summer should work fine as the weather is usually good enough to fly quite a bit. It should take between 40 and 60 hours depending on how fast you pick it up and study on your own. After you get your certificate to remain current you need to do 3 take-offs and landings in the previous 90 days.
