respect for the deceased and a chance to celebrate their life. Also a way of helping families cope with their grief through making the loss real and a chance to say goodbye. :(

I was just thinking about this today. I think it is more for the living. The dead are already in their resting place. The funeral must be to show support for the living.

Of course its for the dead, you just wouldn't watch your friend or relative die and dump them in a field somewhere, would you? Well, depending on how well you liked them, some might just get dumped in a field and fed to the vultures. But burial or cremation is a proper ceremony in my opinion. I prefer burials. The living just come out to support the family, be nosey to see how well the funeral home did the body and eat up all the damn food afterwards!

Maybe neither...
On the practical side, where would you keep a dead body? In the morgue - you would have to pay rent and imagine the pollution. Not to mention that the elements would be 'stuck' instead of going from dust to dust, ashes to ashes......
