dogs usualyy get bald spots when their body is trying to heal a wound or scab. It's happened to my dogs. Even though it takes a month or two to grow back, it does grow back.
I'm not sure if this is your problem, if not go see a vet.

Does he have any sores? Does he itch? If so it might be demodectic mange (different from sarcopic mange).
If he shows these symptoms I would get him to the vet. Demodectic Mange can be serious.
Other than that it's probably allergies and I would try changing his food. Less grains, more natural and more meaty.

he probably has "hot spots" that's where they loose their hair and it looks infected. you will have to take the dog to the vet, for actobotics and some type of cream.
