Sounds like cheap price if rest of truck is good. Remember 4x2 will be lousy in snow without rear weight and good tires. Clutches are hydraulic, last long time 125K- 175K depending on previous driver. battery is common replacement, have alt checked at parts store before replacing because not so common to go bad. go for rebuilt, should be less than $200. Whar can you ask for for less than a grand?
I have a 96, been very reliable (mechanically)
except I live in ME and salt does a number on them
needed all new brake lines $500
The rear leaf spring mount rusted and broke
Rotors are expensive on 4x4 w/ antilocks
heater relay has burnt out 2x

The 4 cylinder engines need an occasional timing belt, but usually run a long time. The 3.0 in mine has been ok so far (a little short on power with an automatic in a 4x4). The 4.0 is a great engine with a tendency to get vacuum leaks around the intake manifold.
My 2000 has 74,000 on it and the only problem has been a squeaky fan belt. The 1987 4 cyl. I had before that had 255,000 when I traded it in & it still ran great.

Fords are reliable vehicles I have always owned one RANGERS don't have any problems but an altenater is going to cost you and so is the battery you might want to take it into a mechanic and have a complete diagnostic done before you decide to purchase it ....good luck

real good price....
96s don't really have any problems except some with check engine light issues and the shifter wearing out on the manuals at 150k miles but pretty trouble free.

Go for it! They all have problems, but that sounds affordable enough for me. Put a bicycle in the back in case of problems.
I'd find me a wrecking yard for parts to fix it. You could sell it not running for that.

you're spending 450-500 on a vehicle and you're curious as to if it could possibly have problems in the future? well, it's and old vehicle and all vehicles eventually get problems...
