When I was underage, no. Now, absolutely. Am I a hypocrite? Probably. But at least I'll be a living hypocrite if I can keep you guys off the road...

The United States has the highest drinking age in the world, and some of the worst alcohol abuse (and attitudes about alcohol's place in society). I believe the two facts are connected.

The age should be DRASTICALLY lowered for consuming alcoholic beverages with meals at restaurants and other places where food is being served, including perhaps within comprehensive alcohol education classes in high schools (which should be compulsury), especially if [the] minors are accompanied by parents, guardians or spouse.

Then the driving age should be made 2 years higher than the drinking-with-meals age.

It's all about being able to handle alcohol. If you are an idiot, then it doesn't matter if you are 16 or 60. If you drink and drive, that's a mistake. If you are an angry drunk, that's a mistake. If you are a depressed drunk, that's a mistake. No matter what your age is, you probably shouldn't be drinking.

But with no disrespect, a lot of teens don't act responsible. Not all of them, mind you. But booze only makes it worse.

Unfortunately it is against the law in some places whereas older civilizations generally are more tolerant of exposing young people to alcoholic beverages - virtually always, WINE or beer, not distilled products.

When these beverages are presented as part of a meal, children learn that it is possible to drink without getting drunk, that they are part of one's diet, not some demoniacal substances that promise all sorts of glorious and gloriously illegal excitement.

When they are forbidden to young people, of course they are going to be much more of a temptation.

Incidentally to this, don't you think it a bit hypocritical that in many jurisdictions you can drive, join the army, get married and divorced and have children before you are allowed to drink?

I started drinking with my friends when I was 14. first time I drank was when I was 6 (uncles in Italy). as long as they arent stupid about it. I think the best thing for kids is to learn about drinking at a younger age. If this is mom or dad wondering about it, go for it.

I started drinking at 14. The idea then was to drink until you passed out. Half my friends ended up alcoholic because their bodies were conditioned to getting drunk often. Underage drinking? With moderation, probably OK. Getting skunked, stupid.

I think before a child goes out at 18 on there own they should get drunk under their parents supervision so they know what to expect. I have heard horror stories of alcohol poisoning and rape you name it all because they went out and did the unthinkable and got drunk! Be careful be sure you can trust who you party with.

i drank while under age.
the young do have a tendency to do some stupid things.
maybe, if it's supervised.
otherwise, i would be a hypocrite.
but i do believe that parents should be parents before friends.
