Fedor Emelianenko is alive, fights sambo/judo, present (pridefighting heavyweight champion only lost 1 time out of 23 fights due to a cut 6 years ago in 2000) He is the best fighter hands down.
Bruce Lee is dead, fights jeet kun do, past (known as best fighter when he was alive, Hundreds of people challenged him, because he was the best, he was the world champion, not a fiction story)
Its not Rutten because he is too slow and cant keep up with the things today, kinda like royce gracie, both rutten and gracie were great in their times but mma has evolved too much for them. Bruce Lee would be champion in the ring today if he was alive, his use of his own style was almost perfect.
SpiderTiger if u think the best swordsman in Japan then i might as well say the best shotgun shooter in america is lol

The Best fighters are those that don't often show case their talent. Or if they do its only to their students and those that deserve it. Saying that all these boxers are the best is ok but everyone has their own different views of which whom is the best fighter. I would have to say the best fighter i have seen was my 87 year old master i had when i was 14. Sayign that some old man doesn't have strength is both incorect and ignorant. This man could pick up a 300 pound man with 100% technique and throw him against the wall barely makign contact. So ide like to see some of those 200 pound knuckle heads in the UFC walk up to a practitioner in Kung-Fu. And although muay thai is highly effective they show boat it so much its going to become a joke. I love the idea of muay Thai kick boxing and the art but for some reason the people taht take it tend to be cockier than hell. teh fact that most of the people on here that brag about it are north american they should be quite. Because ide liek to see one of you americanized Thai fighters walk up to a person thats well versed in kung-fu. I bet most experienced tai-chi weilders could beat the crap out of you in pure technique. Or why not fight some one in judo or aikido you'll get the crap beat out of you theres nothing defensive about boxing. everyobodies got to learn that every fighting style is different and none are superior not even everyones all famed all strong Muay Thai.

For those who say old master, get over it! Old master wouldn't have any useful technique. As for weapon... well today fighter can go and buy a gun and shoot the old fighter with sword of past.

The answer to this question can never be known.
I am amazed by all these people who train in martial arts calling out Bruce Lee and UFC fighters. Yes, these guys are good but have they forgotten about the ancient masters.
With weapons, I would put my money on Musashi, he was the greatest swordsman in Japan.
Empty hand I would safley bet on Matsamura.

GSP hands down, matt hughes might have been stronger 5 yrs ago but right now GSP is the strongest and one of if not the fastest guy at 170. GSP is strong enough that he would be one of the stronger guys at 185, and he has the speed of a 155. Pound for pound GSP is the best athlete in mma, the guys a freak.

I am sure the best fighter alive is some wrinkled up little old man (or woman!) living in isolation somewhere in a remote area of Asia, of whom nobody knows about...
Nine Demons god apparently has never met an old master.
In response to Jim R, Benny the Jet is one tough dude!
