I have a friend visiting LA for the first time. He wants to see if LA is "all that" so I feel like I'm under a lot of pressure to show the city off. He will be here for 2 days.

Disney Hall and the new cathedral downtown if he is interested in architecture. Venice and Santa Monica Pier if he wants to see the beach. The Getty museum for art and architecture. Beverly Hills or Melrose Avenue for shopping. Mulholland Drive or cruise Sunset Boulevard for views and atmosphere. Grauman's Chinese if he is a movie buff. Universal Studios if you must go to a theme park, but better movie studio tours can be arranged at Warners or Paramount. Dodger Stadium to watch the Dodgers lose. But I actually think the coolest sight in LA is Watts Towers.

I can only tell you where they took me: La Brea Tar Pits. The Griffith Conservatory. The museum of Natural History. Sea World. Some medieval theme restaurant (It was something else...but I don't remember the name of it). Universal Studios. Grauman's Chinese Theater. The horse races (can't remember the name of it either). They took me up through the Hollywood Hills for a breathtaking view. I hope this gives you some ideas. I had a blast.
