My friend works for the railroad and he tells me to always keep my car back away from the rails at least the length of one railroad car.

They aren't really THAT close. It just seems that way as the train goes flying by at high speed. There's probably 10-12' or more. That's plenty.

I can't think of any reason for you to keep back as far as your friend says. It's pretty rare to see a train de-rail. It's about as likely as a plane crash.

well federal law mandates that school buses stop between 15 and 50 feet before the railroad crossing... so it is safe to say that 15 ft is plenty of space, or they wouldnt let school buses get that close
