You could say "I really care for you but I need to have some space." Tell him you will call him when you are ready.. That way the ball is on your side. If you ever want to see how things would work out again you can call him. If you don't you don't have to call.

the truth hurts but i think the best thing is to tell him nicely. by not telling your bf you're just making your life miserable and it's unfair to him as well. don't waste his or your time. the longer you take the deeper the cut. time heal all wounds. be supportive and polite when you break him the news and i think he'll respect you even more for that.

Tell him exactly that. "I don't want to be with you anymore." Sounds harsh, but saying anything else could lead to lots of confusion. Good luck!
