I didn't used to think so but the older I get the more I am beginning to think that it really would be a better place without religion. I have come to think that religion is holding back the world and science from moving forward and perhaps actually solving some of the worlds problems

The World would be better off without all the fights because of different religious beliefs, but if the World all had the same religion or at least people would actually READ their holy books and realize that above all else, killing is wrong, religion will be considered bad. God never wanted anyone to die in His name, He just wanted people to be willing to die for Him.

I doubt that this world woud have existed this long without religion. I mean, many people in this world believe in some form of God, and use this belief as strength to not do something really evil. Could you imagine if there was no thought of Heaven and Hell what some people would have done if there was no punishment, or what good people would have not done if they didn't feel there was a reward? The world would be a terrible place that might have already been destroyed.

I think Religion is necessary without a doubt.

No -- Karen Armstrong (http://www.salon.com/books/int/2006/05/30/armstrong/print.html ) has some good things to say on this:

Religion is a search for transcendence. But transcendence isn't necessarily sited in an external god, which can be a very unspiritual, unreligious concept. The sages were all extremely concerned with transcendence, with going beyond the self and discovering a realm, a reality, that could not be defined in words. Buddhists talk about Nirvana in very much the same terms as monotheists describe God.

Secular fundamentalists have as bigoted a view of religion as some religious fundamentalists have of secularism. When you hate religion, it's also very easy to hate the people who practice it.

Yes absolutely. Religion is basically man trying to control yet another thing in his greed to be in charge, or God. And what man is trying to control is Spirit, or God, with rules and regulations.... most of the time for a price, with the threat of eternal damnation, guilt, fear, the whole 9 yards. People who have managed to free themselves from this slavery, religion, would be more prone to say they are spiritual as opposed to "religious". Religion is the Real Boogeyman, the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Can bird fly without wings?!
"Religion is a human phenomenon that defies easy definition. It is commonly understood as a group of beliefs or attitudes concerning an object (real or imagined), person (real or imagined), or system of thought considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine or highest truth, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions, and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. "
Idol of modern world is Money, it means RELIGION!
It has sacrifices, priests and followers.
I choose to believe in God, with all his wisdom then follow gold calf where you can buy and sell everything.

Yes, but there would have to be something to take its place. Spirituality comes to mind. People can't deal with knowing they're going to die someday. That cuts pretty deep, psychologically. There has to be a better paradigm than the events of 2000 years ago. Hope we find it. "I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do. So I leave it up to you."

Damn straight.

We could actually use science to help make the world a better place and stop fighting over old stories...

By the way, how did your speech defect get fixed? Don't tell me it was a miracle... I might have to find religion again!
