I'm sure there are countries where Islam is reasonably tolerant towards women whether they break the law or not. Then you get countries like Iran where the slightest breaking of rules/laws is met to our eyes with extreme punishments.
As an example those two gay youths that were hanged in Iran only last year, they were kept in prison, lashed & then executed, frankly I think there are aspects of Islam that's barbaric...Some Muslims will no doubt disagree with what I've said but in a lot of Muslim countriesm women (& others) live in a male dominant, fear ridden society, where dissent is dealt with in extreme ways.

By 'advising' men to 'advise' women to cover up because male sexuality is more 'violent' than women's, Islam gives permission for men to pursue a violent approach to women if they aren't covered up or 100% obedient to the mysoginistic 'rules' of the religion. All responsibility and blame is removed from the male. All formal religions are based on the same premise.

Covering up a woman's natural form to 'protect' her from men says that men are naturally untrustworthy. This, I don't believe.

In any case, sexual depravity occurs in Islamic societies whether or not women are covered. It is not confined to the west.

There is also a point to argue that covering up actually draws more attention to the female, not less.

As for hanging women for shoplifting. Well, even in the UK, women are treated more harshly than men by the judicial system.
Granted, we don't hang people, (thankfully), but women's prisons are full of women who have committed minor offences for which men would simply be fined and sent home.

It's a strange and unbalanced world we live in! Religion is to blame for most of it.

Why do every body bother himself with the treatment of Muslims to thier women? We are free to perform our religion like others perform theirs. And do you think that shoplifting is found only in Muslim's society? They are not angeles !! Do u want to say that nothing wrong with ur society? As if u do as the proverb says: fire burnes your clothes and you look for a stain on the cloth of your neighbor.

Im a muslim myself.. and no women are not treated badly.. im suprised it still is a misconception! Islam actually shows how a woman should b treated.. she is respected and asked to cover up so that she is no longer a toy in a mans mind! (no that all men are liek that im sure). I have to emphasise the fact that tradition plays a big part in the misconception people like yourself have. It is not islam and muslims you are reffering to.. its sexist tradtional people who dont follow the true islam!

That is a core belief in Islam. It is not extremist. It is central to Islam.
It is the so called "moderate Muslims" in the West that are the extremists.
Violence is an integral part of the Islamic religion.
Islam is fundamentally opposed to Christianity in that Muslims are given explicit permission to judge another Human on behalf of God and therefore, execute another Human on behalf of God.

UPDATE:
To Beautiful, Loved and Great:
Your web link to the "Quran" is not a website that contains the complete true writings in the Quran. This makes you guilty of Heresy and therefore must be put to death under the true rules of Islam.
To Michelle G:
You are not well read enough of the Quran dear. You are wrong in your assumtion, sorry.

4:15
As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them.

5:33
The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger ... will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom.

5:38
As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands. It is the reward of their own deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah.

8:12
I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.

17:16
And when We would destroy a township We send commandment to its folk who live at ease, and afterward they commit abomination therein, and so the Word (of doom) hath effect for it, and we annihilate it with complete annihilation.

24:2
The adulterer and the adulteress, scourge ye each one of them (with) a hundred stripes. And let not pity for the twain withhold you from obedience to Allah, if ye believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of believers witness their punishment.

47:4
Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds.

misunderstanding of Islam. It's actually nothing to do with religion. For example, before Islam Arabs used to cover their wives and an Arab male could marry several females according to his social status.Male babies were a sign of pride and even at some cases female babies were buried.Women were badly treated in society before Islam.Islam tried to remove this. But some traditions were kept alive and still exist.Even in my country Turkey,in some places women are still treated as a second class person. But this is traditional more than being religional and wrong according to me.

I am a Muslim and a member of the Turkish Republic(an ally of USA if you remember)
We don't force women to cover themselves.
Many girls wear bikinis in the summer.(swimming together with men)
Unlike many western civilizations our constitution does not include religion.(we are secular.which means modern law has nothing to do with religious law)
We don't hang women for shoplifting...actually we don't ever hang them.No death penalty.(do you have it?)

I don't want to make it any longer so please stop generalising.
It's about countries...not about a whole community.

The misconception of wearing a veil by women is an illogical premise to claim that women are inferior to men or oppressed by them. It is more appropriate to indict a society of female exploitation if it tolerates pornography rather than if it enforces the veil. Given that Allah is neither male nor female, given that He does not endear people to Himself based on their gender, given that the Creator cares about all of us male or female, given that the sexual and violent drive of men is stronger than that of women...given all this, it is illogical to cast a negative light on the following injunctions contained in the Qur'an (translation)

[33:59] O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not be annoyed...

[24:30-31] Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands...

On this misconception, there is a great deal more to write, most of it showing how current practices in many Muslim lands go against what the Qur'an and Sunnah have ordained, lands in which women are treated as property (unIslamic), are not educated (unIslamic), are forbidden their economic rights (unIslamic), and more. On this point in particular, we encourage everyone to consult the Qur'an and Sunnah before incriminating Islam. Always remember that Islam is a complete way of life from the Creator, and that Muslims are people who claim to follow that way of life. A Muslim may claim to follow Islam, but be wrong.

Go to this website. Click on the drop down list and select "Women." Watch each video, and you will see how Islam truly treats women. ==> http://www.watchislam.com/videos/

Pick up a copy of the Holy Qur'an. If you don't have a copy, go here ==> http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/pick/index.htm and click on the 4th chapter of the Qur'an called an-Nisa' (Women). There's the truth in writing. An entire chapter of the Qur'an is dedicated to the subject of women. You can see the truth for yourself.
