As stable? You mean Linux is MORE stable than Windows.
Linux is based on core UNIX and UNIX is the most stable OS in the world. It is text only and hard to configure (1 command sometimes has 5 different modifiers) so Linux is a GUI version of UNIX.
Windows is not UNIX based, has no security and has the largest library of malicious code.

Windows and Stable should not be used in the same sentence. The only time it is stable is when it is turned off. You need to decide what you use and do. There are many programs that are available for Linux and mostly free. Do your self a favour and ditch microsoft and get linux or linspire which is linux based but looks and feels like windows or go the whole hog and buy an Apple, trust me you will ask yourself why you ever bothered with windows in the first place.

yes Linux is great - far more stable than Windows, that's why it is used in so many huge installations like massive internet servers.
But you say you are not a computer nut. My advice is, sadly, steer well clear for the time being. I installed Linux on a laptop about three years ago and gave up on it because I was spending entire weekends working out what the f*** was going on with it. Maybe you know more about computers. Maybe Linux has more understandable interfaces now. Maybe more peripherals can be used with it these days.
Why not buy a very cheap computer secondhand and mess about with Linux on it to see whether you understand what is happening?
Good luck!

Linux is stable, and easy to use!
You don't even need to uninstall Windows -- you can make a dual-boot system and have the best of both worlds: Windows and Linux on the same computer.
Best of all, Linux is free!
You should download Ubuntu. It is easy to install new programs with just a few clicks. It is often easier to install programs on Ubuntu Linux than on Windows. You get many thousands of FREE PROGRAMS with Ubuntu.
Check it out, and if you have any questions, there are many people online that will help you.

Linux is much more stable and a hell of a lot more secure. Don't believe it when people say it's harder to use, it is now just as easy as windows and once you get used to it, it is easier than windows.
If you want to try it I would advise downloading Suse 10.1 you can get it from:
http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/?sourceidint=productsmenu_linuxprofessional
and setting it up to dual boot with windows until you get the hang of it.
People often mistakenly say it's harder than windows but most people put in a lot of time learning to use windows and because Linux is different they complain, the differences are what make it better and if you use a distro like Suse all the software comes with it and is very easy to install.
To install it follow the instructions on the website, it will partition your harddrive and install a lot easier than if you wanted to do the same operation with windows.
Mail me if you want any advice, I only use Suse Linux and don't use windows at all, after a while you wonder why you ever bothered with windows.

If you are not even remotely a computer nut I would not recommend you try Linux, stick with windows. Linux is stable but it takes some work and know how.
Linux in and of itself is computer learning experience and that's just to get it loaded and working not to mention finding linux drivers for all your hardware.

Linux is now stupid friendly visit redhat.com and download the latest version of fedora. Burn the iso to a dvd and put it in your pc's dvd drive and reboot. It will walk you through the setup (just as easy as installing windows). Once gnome or kde (your choice) comes up the GUI will look similar to that of windows. To install programs, just find the installation file for fedora/redhat (ends with extension .rpm) and double click. The OS will install the file for you just like an .exe file in windows. There is no reason why you should be using windows unless you like the BSOD, are in an office that requires you use it, or enjoy paying massive amounts of money for software that is not fully developed prior to deployment.
Upgrade now of forever live in M$ Winblows.

No, it's not.
While Linux is far more stable than Windows, general maintenance such as program installations are quite a bit more involved than Windows. If you are not a computer nut, and don't want to learn, then stick with Windows.

Linux is very basic, not easy to use, so if you aren't very capable as a computer user, use windows
Linux is more stable indeed, but wont work if you don't know how to use it
