it shows that Jesus was not really resurrected? It is known that the nightshade plant has a poison that can make you go into a coma for a few days and have the appearance of death, so what if that is what happened?

Geoff C, are you stupid? What about the Book of Enoch? Look at my previous question.

What if the spear was exaggerated? What if he just passed out unconcious and they took him down, because they thought he was dead?

For a short answer, I like the first poster's response. (This is purely a "What if...?" question without real support.)

As further explanation, though, if you wanted to build support for this, you'd have to:

1. Determine how probable it is that these "mysterious books" might exist, first of all.

2. If found, weigh their content against what we already know, based on the books we DO have many verified records of.

3. Determine whether the nightshade plant was indigenous to Jesus' location and how common it was to find

4. Determine how easy it was to distill poison that would kill (rather than comatize)

5. Determine what people had the knowledge and equipment to do so.

6. Determine how it would have been given to Jesus (in the right amount, and without being noticed) while he hung in the air on a cross

7. Explain why the soldiers believed him to be dead after they stabbed him in the side with a spear (and water and blood came out -- which happens after death)

8. Determine why others at that time did not suggest this as a viable alternative, and why it took 2000 years for someone unfamiliar with the culture to come up with the notion

... and so forth.

Speculation is easy; drawing plausible conclusions demands research and testing.

I think there's a lot of work to be done if one is to build support for this sort of hypothesis; but if you are interested in it, I encourage you to figure out what questions you need to answer, then research each one, then see what you find out...

Okay if you take the Bible as truth and I'm assuming you do...I would think that the large nails through the wrists and ankles and the spear in the side. ( Not to metion the scourging beforehand) might have more to do with the appearance of death then a lil Nightshade. Just a thought....

Oh yeah and Geoff C needs a history lesson if he thinks there are no missing books in the Bible!

There are no missing books of the Bible. God preserved the books we have because they are the only ones. The so called "missing gospels" were writtien 200-1000 years later by people who claimed to be apostles. (so they were liars from the get go) The gospels were written by the apostles durring times when eyewitnesses would have corrected any mistakes.
Jesus died. The Romans were masters at executions. There is no possible way after being so stressed you sweat blood, having the flesh whipped off your back then carrying a tree on it, and then dying on a cross with nails in your hands so you have to kill yourself to breathe, that anyone could survive it. NOT POSSIBLE!!!

the book would be discarded because it would contridict what the bible already says. 4 gospel accounts say the apostles were witesses to the resurrection. with all the beatings, Jesus should have been dead from just those...the cros was just a place where thye hung him so he coudl finish dying.... also with the severe degree of fatal wounds he had, the number of hours to suffocate and have his lungs collapse, making it through all that would have been impossible....the nightshade thing might work on a very healthy person, but not on someone with fatal wounds, 39 areas of flesh torn from his body, bleeding to death, and a spear through his side, lung and heart.

That would certainly put a damper in somebody's day.

Just think of all the rewriting that would have to be done:

"Jesus died on the cross for your sins"

would have to become

"Jesus went comatose on the cross for your sins"

The Easter season would be totally blown, although sales of chocolate bunnies would probably skyrocket as all of the faithful try to drown their despair at having the rug yanked out from under them.

Quite frankly, if some of the stories are to be believed, this information may already be hidden under the Vatican. Considering most religions are based around controlling the populace, the chances of such information becoming known, let alone accepted are pretty slim.

And what if pigs could fly? There are no missing books, the Bible is complete. The "swoon" theory is easily debunked. Do you really think that Jesus, after suffering scourging which rips the flesh off his body, extreme hunger and thirst, beatings, and crucifixion could suddenly wake up and in his severely weakened state move a stone weighing several tons, fight off Roman soldiers who were guarding the tomb and appear to His apostles as resurrected? Are you kidding me?? Do you really think that the apostles and others who witnessed the risen Christ would think He rose from the dead if they saw someone in His deteriorated physical condition?

Some times playing what if is what makes the world go round. If someone did not start playing the what if game we might not have cars, computers, air conditioning, etc. And no one knows for sure what happened 2000 years ago. Just because a book says one thing does not prove that it really happened. Remember that history is written by the winners.

I read that there's nothing reliable to even prove Jesus' existence. There are some questionable references in Josephus (Flavius') acct and then you have to look up Origen's acct (& I'm not sure he mentions any of the miracles JC performed that are listed in the NT books that are in the Bible)
but...regardless, overall, his character sets a good example (there are questionable quotes & actions when looked into); I'm under the impression that many of the Gnostic Gospels have positive stories

So he rolled the 2 ton stone up a hill away from the opening, walked several miles on pierced feet and then convinced his disciples that even though he was a bruised and bloody absolute mess, He had somehow 'conquered death?'

Doesn't sound very plausble to me.

So, he took some nightshade, got beaten for hours, then stabbed in the heart and he still died... unless nightshade like... heals spear wounds to the heart.
