I read the a radio operator in America received the SOS from the Titanic. This guy later founded NBC by the way. There is not much could be done from land since the Titanic only lasted a couple of hours.

However the US had a large military ship that was less than 45 minutes away from the Titanic, and the US sailors watched the emergency flares going up. They received the SOS as well.

Why did they not help?
Was the captain put on trial for his inaction?
Was he under orders to not make contact with anything?

What is the reasoning for not responding to an SOS?

I know that radio signals were picked up on land by ham radio operators. I do not recall hearing that one of the operators later founded NBC, but I suppose anything is possible.

As for the military ship, there were no U.S. military ships in the area or within sailing distance of the Titanic when she sank. There were a number of ships in the area during the night, but not all of them had radio (wireless was new then). The Californian, which was stopped nearby because of the ice, did see the rockets but the radio operator (only one in those days) was asleep and no one bothered to wake him up to see what was going on. The captain, Stanley Lord, spent the rest of his life living down the reputation as the man who slept on while Titanic sank.

Another side note: Titanic was the first ship to use the code SOS, which had just been adopted. The previous code was CQD, or Come Quickly, Distress.

That wasn't the only ship that received an SOS. Most people thought that the Titanic was crying wolf. They ignored it & some ships even turned off their radios. In almost all of the Titanic recreations, they show one ship doing such a dirty deed. The crew figured the flares were part of a party going on onboard the Titanic.

in 30 years of reading and studying about the Titanic this is the first I've ever heard about a "large US military ship"...theyre called naval ships by the way.....being anywhere nearby....it didnt happen.

There was a passenger ship, the Californian, stopped in the ice that night about 10 miles away..her crew did see the distress rockets; her Captain didnt and went back to sleep and a lot of people died as a result...

Actually, the California was once good inside sight of the RMS Titanic and might have certainly helped retailer a ample quantity of lives. The California did not anything legally flawed. They adopted the foundations of the ocean as they stood at the moment. History has made its jjudgmenthowever. Capt Lord died with a black mark on his list. I am definite his movements haunted him for the relaxation of his existence.

He had to be under strict orders, because maritime law requires him to help.
