I think small birds are better left in their environment to face natural dangers, not the ones that you subject them to in your home. I really don't think anyone should own any type of bird unless you have an aviary for it.

Ok first off.

Birds that are kept in cages such as parrots, finches, canaries, toucans, and ravens. They were hand fed and born in cages. They think of the cage as their home, not as a prison. Provided the cage has lots of interesting toys and the bird is out of its cage either playing or socializing with its owner at least 4 hours aday.

As far as clipping their wings this subject is debatable. Their are advantages and disadveantages to having a birds wings clipped. Such as obesity, and not being able to fly away from a pet dog or cat if something was to happen. If a bird was flighted it could escape these dangers, but their is the possibity of the bird flying aaway and if it gets loose wont have any survival skils in the wild, and will die from starvation and dehydration. In fact some birds even if their wings arent clipped choose not to fly. My African Grey Max has been fully flighted for a long time and he has never flown intentionally, however it makes me feel good to know if something bad was to happen to him he can get away.

And some birds are wing clipped their whole life and are happy socializing with their owner and playing with their toys in their cage.

as far as birds in an aviary this has its advantages and disadvantages. The bird getting exercise, and socializing with other birds if housed with other birds. The downside is if the bird is housed with other birds or if it isnt handled frequently can become wild and aggressive.

If the birds are being given a geat diet, are out of their cages with lots of social interaction, and have lots of toys inside their cage as well as outside their cage and their wings are clipped I see no reason why the birds shouldnt be happy.

If you say that then you would also have to say clipping their wings should be illegal too. The I am sure you would have a list of things that should be illegal. I have two cockatiels and I keep them in cages. They are allowed out when we are home. I have an inside dog and think it's better that they stay in the cage while we are out then to have them out where the dog can EAT them! Now I can understand where you are coming from if you are talking about large birds like umbrella cockatoos or something like that, but small birds should be in cages to prevent injury and other things from happening, like them flying into the windows and causing perminate damage.

i agree. I have a bird and I only keep him in a cage during the night so that he doesn't make a mess that we don't know about. then as soon as I wake up, I put him on his play pen. and i only clip his wings when they get too long. but we clip then so he can still fly, but they're not longer than he is. I think it should be illegal during the day, but at night, they can be in their cage.Plus you have to let your bird be able to fly at all times. I guess yopu could kleep them in cages, as long as they're big enough so that the bird can fly in the cage. like the ones at the zoo that alow the birds to have flying space. then I guess it would be all right because it's just like if you let them out in a small house with only bird stuff. it could work.

It shouldn't be illegal but they should be able to fly around in your house because if the cage is too big it takes up a lot of space! It is mean to keep them all couped up in a cage other than having wings and not being able to fly around. Birds like big place to fly around.

Captive

I think – if I were penned up in a town
However fine my prison-house might be
And knew that nevermore I’d walk the down
Nor sense again the magic of the sea;

But tamely pace a fenced-in city park
Or watch the sparrows building in the eaves
Amid the roar of traffic sadly mark
Each year the autumn carpeting of leaves –

Unlike the lark, deprived of joyous flight
Who from his cruel cage attempts to sing
Not brave as he, I’d turn me from the light
Sick with remembrance of the glorious spring.

And God, in pity for some captive fast
Might loose the bars and bid him soar at last.

I can see how you might think keeping a parrot safe, healthy and well fed might seem cruel. I have 6- 2 cockatoos, 2 sun conures and 2 amazons. They have their own room and their own fur nature through out the house. I am never home without them ALL being out, on a play gym and having fun. However, then people like you are free to wonder around anywhere you'd like.

I think some people keep their birds in cages that are too small...but if you take good care of your bird I don't think that it is bad to have one as a pet. What I do think is bad is the people who take them from the wild when there numbers are low such as some wild macaws and other rare parrots.

All I have to say is the world is fill of dirty people such as 'Sierra.' Even though I am a bird lover, I do have dreams to release all birds or animals captivated within a store or anywhere for the benefit of a human. We will someday acheive this...someday.

I do not know much about birds, so I cannot speak to it, but I abhor keeping dogs on chains outside!!! It is inhumane and teaches them to be aggressive.
