“Truth is the shattered mirror strewn in myriad bits; while each believes his little bit the whole to own."
~Robert Burton (English Writer and Clergyman, 1577-1640)

True? Untrue? What do you think?

I think it's quite accurate, myself. No one knows the whole truth about why we're here or what made us, but everyone thinks they have the right answer,

Just curious what other's views are. :)

Great quote!!!

I think anyone who wrestles with trying to understand truth comes to a similar conclusion. Even the Apostle Paul writes that we only see through a glass darkly (1 Cor 13:12).

I personally found it a great relief when I didn't have to have all the answers.

Blessed Be

Excellent quote, I love it! I also do agree. You've heard there are 3 sides to every story, right? Person A's story, Person B's, and the truth.

It would be amazing if we could all take our tiny mirrors, believing in those little pieces passionately, and just as passionately want to unite them to find the whole mirror again. I know this will most likely never happen. But a girl can dream, can't she? *smile*

I think it's saying that the truths in life are very scattered and we come across these little bits of truth as we live and when we find those things that are true to us in the heart, we tend to hang on to them. Looking at the bigger picture, I think if the whole of humanity would come together and each *share* their truths, then we would eventually see "the whole truth."

And I don't think that's the "right" answer, just one answer in a whole sea of individual truths.

belief has more power than anything on earth I think. science keeps updating and keeps modernizing but belief stays the same, for thousands of years now people have been believing in the same religions, to extremes, killing for their religion (even thought it probably goes against moral standards in their own cultures), killing for beliefs of superiority, prejudice, lack of acceptance and at the same time belief is the result of so many beautiful things that help our world. Everyone definitely thinks that their little piece of the puzzle is the whole. How else could we believe if we didn't believe that what we believe in is true? If we believed that there are other parts of the puzzle out there that may make more sense than ours, I don't think we'd have true reason to believe at all.

Its a nice quote and I agree everybody thinks that they have the truth and everyone else is deceived... BUT I do believe that it doesnt mean there isnt a truth and that maybe one of those groups is right. The truth has a distinct ring to it and when you see it you will know it

i just had a visual.
you know the signs they have at football games with the cardboard pieces? the people in the seats hold the cardboard over their heads and a message is there.
imagine all of us , each with our own little piece of mirror, holding it up for everyone to see.
we would all be able to see ourselves as someone else; and as everyone else sees us. we would be forced to become the best people we can be.

i do agree. i believe it is accurate.
this is one reason for searching your own personal truth.
there is never one completely correct answer for anything because things change. for instance: 1 person + 1 person does not always = 2 people.

Talk about shattered truth. I finally read your profile. I wasn't going to tell you to put some clothes on, but now I have to keep believing. Somehow.

Maybe the devout can help me, cause that is one little bit I didn't want to lose...

I don't think we're meant to know all truth in the universe. Truth isn't relative, though. There are absolutes. Denial of absolutes doesn't change them. It just makes the denying party incorrect.

The quote is untrue. The only truth is in God. Post-Modern thought will come to pass.

A nice quote but for faith incorrect.

As an analogy very nice, but really:

We are given a number of puzzles with hundreds of pieces. We are trying to determine what they depict by analyzing each individual piece or a random combination of pieces. without being able to complete even one puzzle.
