i think the most controlled way to do this is to grab the desired amount of hair from the front of your scalp and pull it toward the back, then twist it a little, which causes it to "poof" a little while keeping all the ends together nicely. then push the twisted ends forward slightly until you have the height you desire then lay them flat and bobby pin across them at a perpendicular angle.
variations on this style are to try doing the front like this, but wearing the rest of your hair down (straight, or wavy looks good). also you can pull your hair into a bun, or a scrunchy pony tail too - where you pull it back then grab pieces in front of the band and pull them out a little to create a messy effect.
good luck :)

You put yr hair in a pontytail, then you take some hair from the front part, just a little bit, or if you have bangs use them, then you take it out of the ponytail and clip yr bangs to your head but push the clip a lil forward

grab a small strip of hair, like where ur bangs should be and take a bobby pinn and put it in so it poofs up and put a few more in for hold, then lightly hairspray it, I LOVE THAT STYLE, i do it alllll the time, especially good if u have bangs and no time to do nething to tehm
