In most kennels, puppies get the first taste of food other than Mom’s milk at about 3½ weeks of age. To make a puppy mush, stay with the same brand of food the mother is fed, selecting the company’s dry puppy food. It might be Iams, Purina, Science Diet, Nature’s Recipe, etc.
Prepare the puppy mush by placing 2 cups of high quality dry puppy food in a blender with 12.5 oz liquid puppy milk replacer and fill the rest of the blender with hot water. This should be blenderized until the consistency of human infant cereal. (This feeds 6-8 puppies of a medium-sized breed.) The puppies should receive 3-4 meals a day of this to start. Once the puppies have checked it out, walked in it, and have eaten some, the dam can be allowed to finish it and clean the puppies off. Each week, increase the amount of food, decrease the amount of the milk replacer and water that is added, and the time of blenderizing, so by 7 weeks, the puppies are eating dry food.

Sure, some momma dogs have already started to refuse to nurse their puppies by 5 weeks. We got a puppy at 4 weeks because the mom's owners said the mom was refusing to nurse and why not take the puppy now. If the puppies are having trouble with dry food then a couple weeks of canned food will do great until they get the hang of eating dry food.

Solid food can be introduced at 3 weeks in gruel form. Large litters may need it at this age, and some puppies that seem to want to eat. By 5 weeks, they are very ready for solid food. Use a GOOD QUALITY dry puppy food. Not puppy chow or anything else that is mostly corn. Soak it in warm water for a few minutes, and they will love it. Offer it three to four times a day and the mother will wean them naturally.
It is not wise to let puppies go until 8 weeks. If they are AKC registered, you cannot sell them until they are 7 weeks.

You should definately start weaning puppies by 5 weeks. You don't need to take them away from their mom, but you can start offering food to them.
Just pour some hot water on the puppy kibble and let it soak for 20 minutes or so. Mush it up and you can add a little bit of evaportated milk to make it smell better to them.
It might take them a feeding or 2 to actually catch on but I'm betting they are hungry by this age, especially since you have not been offering food to them. You shoudl be feeding them 2 or 3 times a day. In about 2 weeks, you can probably move them onto hard food.

You can supplement with regular puppy food but they do still need to nurse. If they are biting too much then they probably need more stimulus. Play with the pups and provide chew toys, also give mom some breaks to be out of the welping box.
Also, while they are not ready to go yet, this is a good time to find them homes to go in a few weeks.

Hi, you should deffinitely ween them off momma. If they are biting and making her bleed, it's time ;)
Also, you should first check with a vet but sometimes momma can get infections so be careful since she's been bitten by the babies. Start weening them off her by giving them bits of puppy food. Try the puppy chow, the soft and chewy bits.

You can start giving them canned puppy food but they will still need to nurse. By 7 weeks they should only be eating solid food. You actually should have started them on puppy food a week ago. Once they get used to the canned puppy food, mix it with dry food and eventually they should only eat dry food. Good luck!

Yes, you need to feed them since they are almost weaning age.
Most people wein their puppies at six weeks old and you would be smart to have them on dog food at that time. If they are a large breed of dog, you may need to try to get them on food and off of the mama because her teats are probably to sore to let them suck anyways. I would get Purina Puppy Chow and soak it with water, until they can eat the hard dog food.

They can have Puppy Chow by Purina or the new one by Purina One for Healthy Puppies. Wet food is ok, if you don't mind the smell. Just realize that once they get wet food, they'll turn their noses up at the dry left in the bowl & not eat it.
