what about getting him a nice pen with his name on it...professors always like things that will always remain practical..they have some very nice pens...even some tht are plated with gold if you choose to go that far...personalized gifts always go straight to the heart...and as a cute little gift to go along with it you could personalize M&M's where you can pick the colors and the message you want on both sides hehe...good place to find the pens is at things remembered..and the M&M's you can find by googling it :P..good luck..

Don't go overboard! It is fine to express gratitude and respect for someone who does you a favor, but too expensive or elaborate a gift will not accomplish your purpose. It will just embarrass him and make him feel obligated to reciprocate instead, which I know you would not want to do. For a student/teacher relationship I would not spend more than about $50 at the upper limit, beyond that would be too lavish to the point of possibly making him uncomfortable.
I understand about you wanting to avoid overused "desk decor", but you should also be careful not to get too personal, because that would also be uncomfortable for him. Even if you might feel very close to him because of his strong positive influence on your life, you must remember that this is a professional relationship, not a personal one. Part of the respect you show for him should be to keep the appropriate professional distance and decorum, and not be too invasive. Bottom line, this is something you should approach like a business gift. Clothing or other personal items would definitely not be appropriate, those should be reserved for family and close personal friends.
There is nothing at all wrong with chocolates again if they are something you know he really enjoys. Or, if he drinks alcohol, a fine bottle of wine would work well too. A good quality hard-bound book would be another elegant idea, if you know of a particular subject or author he particularly enjoys. Good luck!

My professor did the same thing - he sent me some finance books so I could review them as well as my defined curriculum for a certification after I had graduated. I sent him a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble and then realized that might not have been the best gift so then sent him something from his alma mater since I know he is a fan of their sport's team.

Wine or liquor is a common gift. Although this might be unseemly in a school setting. Are you of drinking age to buy and possess alcohol?

I agree with what was said earlier about the Amazon gift certificate. You know there's something out there he wants but it'll be super hard to find out what it is. Plus, anything you can think of he probably already has! Let him chose. :)
